Ferry Curve Release Debut Album:
The Reason and the Rhyme
Firebird Tricycle Records FTR 90125
“With a sound shaped by the vast, flat landscapes of East Anglia and some clear musical influences, Ferry Curve describe their sound as Fen Rock. The four piece don’t pretend to know exactly what that is, whatever you call this mix of prog rock, folk, pop, indie, alternative and country music, The Reason And The Rhyme is an excellent listen with some absolute gems within its tracks.”

It all began at precisely 12:39pm on May 29th, 2023, when guitarist Jonathan Burt fired off an email across the Cambridgeshire Fens to drummer Jeremy Peake. The proposal? A musical project of “unspecified width, length, and volume,” possibly involving songs longer than twelve minutes. What followed was a flurry of correspondence, a search party for long-lost bass player Will Barfield, and complex negotiations about the acceptable average track length. Somewhere, amid this chaos, Ferry Curve was born—a partial resurrection of the once “Glorious Ferry Curve,” which had thrived some fifteen years earlier..
Joined by singer Martin Wilde— from JB’s former project, The Pawn Hearts, the newly formed quartet began rehearsing through the winter of 2023. The songwriting partnership of Burt and Barfield reignited, producing songs that bore little relation to each other and didn’t fit in any particular genre.
An album slowly emerged. During January 2025, the band entered highly regarded recording engineer Chris Pepper’s Saltwell Studio with eleven tracks and an optimistic plan. After numerous visits, they wrapped the final mix on October 15th, before sending it to renowned mastering wizard Mark Freegard.
Their debut album, The Reason and The Rhyme, spans the emotional and the absurd—from Barfield’s songs of disappointment and angst to Burt’s explorations of ethical computing and the manipulation of history.
The most frequently asked question? “What kind of music do you play?”
The Ferry Curve don’t do covers and very few of their songs end where they started. Their influences come from everywhere and everyone. If a song demands a metal interlude, avant-garde chaos, or a 60s-style pop melody—so be it. Tracks on the album include elements of prog rock, folk, pop, indie, alternative and country music. Expect theremin, Wurlitzer, cowbell, and a sound shaped by the vast, flat landscapes of East Anglia.
The Reason and The Rhyme has just been released on Ferry Curve’s own label, Firebird Tricycle Records, on Bandcamp. CDs are available on request. The band has just played in the heats of the Cambridge Band Competition.
